A Pet Sitter or A Boarding Kennel: What’s Right for Your Cat?
On November, 19, 2019
The holidays are rapidly approaching, and for a lot of people, that means it’s time to travel. Whether you’re taking a long drive to your grandmother’s house for Thanksgiving, or you’re spending time back in your hometown over Christmas, if you’re leaving NYC, you need to make arrangements for your cat.
Some people bring their cats with them on trips, and others prefer to put their cats in a local boarding facility. However, if your cat could make the choice for itself, we’re willing to bet that it’d like to stay home. Cats are territorial, and they’re also creatures of habit, so as long as they have enough food, they’d most likely prefer to stay in their own homes.
Boarding Facilities for Cats
When it comes to boarding facilities for your cat, you have to work to find the right one. Make sure you go to the place beforehand and make sure that it’s a comfortable place for a cat. If your cat is put into a cage, surrounded by other animals, sounds, smells, and sights, it can be a very stressful situation for your pet.
A facility with plenty of space, hiding places, and elevated areas can make a big difference. They can make your cat feel much less anxious, and much more secure. Think of how your cat’s senses are, and try to inspect the kennel from your cat’s point of view.
Home Sweet Home!
The best option for your cat, most likely, is to hire a pet sitter (unless you have a friend or family member who is already comfortable with the cat and is willing to take care of it while you’re gone). Your cat will be its most comfortable if it’s able to stay in its own home with the surroundings it’s familiar with.
Of course, there are some boarding facilities in NYC that are excellent for cats, but if it’s in your budget, a pet sitter is most likely still better for your cat.
How Often Should the Pest Sitter Visit
A professional pet sitter is most likely the best option for a cat, but how frequent should the visits be? Most likely, you’ll probably need two visits a day.
If your cat is used to having two meals a day, then you should have the pet sitter visit at the scheduled times it’s used to eating. It can be very stressful for a cat to have to get used to one meal a day if it’s used to two or three at a scheduled time.
It’s important to make sure that your pet sitter can handle monitoring your cat’s litter. If there are any problems, they need to be noticed immediately, so a twice-daily visit can help ensure that.
